The most common question we get from South Shore homeowners: "What's this going to cost me?" Fair question. A new garage door is a significant purchase — and the pricing can feel opaque until you understand the variables. Here's everything you need to know about new garage door prices in 2026, including what factors move the number up or down.

The Quick Answer

For a standard single-car residential garage door, expect to spend $900–$2,200 installed depending on material and insulation level. A two-car door runs $1,400–$3,800 installed. Custom or carriage-house styles with premium hardware can reach $5,000–$8,000.

That range is wide — intentionally so. Let's break it down.

Door Style: The Biggest Cost Driver

Clopay (our primary supplier) builds doors in four main product lines. The style and construction method determine roughly 60% of your total project cost.

Clopay Line Style Door Only (16×7)
Coiling SteelBasic raised panel$450–$750
Canyon RidgeUltra-grain steel panels$900–$1,400
AvanteFull-view aluminum$1,200–$2,200
Reserve WoodSolid wood$2,500–$5,500
CoachmanCarriage-house steel$1,100–$2,800

Most South Shore homeowners end up in the Canyon Ridge or Coachman range — enough visual upgrade from builder-grade without the maintenance burden of real wood.

Insulation: Worth Paying For in Massachusetts

This is where a lot of buyers leave money on the table by skipping up front. In New England, an insulated garage door isn't a luxury — it's a functional upgrade that pays back over time.

  • Single-layer (no insulation): The door skin is a single sheet of steel. Cheap. Loud. Cold in winter.
  • Two-layer (polystyrene): Foam board glued to the back panel. R-value around 6–8. Decent improvement, moderate cost.
  • Three-layer (polyurethane): Steel + injected foam + steel backing. R-value 12–18. Significantly quieter, more rigid, better thermal performance.

The price difference between no insulation and polyurethane insulation on the same Clopay model is typically $150–$350. For a garage you use daily in Massachusetts winters, it's worth it. See our full breakdown in Best Garage Doors for New England Weather.

Installation: What We Charge

Our standard installation fee is $189. That covers removal and disposal of the old door, installation of the new door and all hardware, balance and safety adjustment, and a full test of the opener system.

What's included in the $189 install fee: Remove old door, haul it away, install new door, all mounting hardware, balance springs, test opener travel limits and force settings, verify all safety sensors. Same-day completion on most standard residential jobs.

If your existing opener is more than 12–15 years old, we'll advise whether it makes sense to replace it at the same time. A new LiftMaster 8500W wall-mount opener adds approximately $350–$550 to the project.

Total Installed Cost: What to Budget

Project Type Door + Installation
Basic steel, 1-car, no insulation$650–$950
Insulated steel, 1-car (most popular)$1,100–$1,700
Carriage-house, 1-car$1,400–$2,400
Insulated steel, 2-car$1,600–$2,600
Carriage-house, 2-car$2,200–$3,800
Full-view aluminum, 2-car$2,800–$5,500
Custom wood, 2-car$5,500–$10,000+

What Moves the Price Up

  • Custom sizes: Non-standard openings (10 ft wide, 9 ft tall) require custom-order doors — add $200–$600 and 2–3 week lead time.
  • Decorative hardware: Hinges, handles, and window inserts add $80–$350 depending on finish.
  • New opener: If you're replacing the opener at the same time, budget $350–$700 depending on model and features (battery backup, WiFi, etc.).
  • Structural repairs: If the framing around your opening is rotted or out of square, that work is separate. We'll quote it before any work starts — no surprises.

What Keeps the Price Down

  • Keeping the existing opener (if it's less than 10 years old and working well)
  • Standard-sized opening (9×7 single, 16×7 double)
  • Raised-panel steel over carriage-house or full-view
  • Skipping decorative hardware on a traditional style
