Costs, timelines, openers, and repair vs. replace. Everything South Shore homeowners want to know before calling.
Our service call is $189, which covers the first hour of labor and full diagnosis. Most common repairs — broken spring, snapped cable, off-track door — are completed within that hour, so what you see is what you pay.
For more complex repairs or parts, we quote you on-site before touching anything. No surprises.
📞 Request a service call →It depends on size, material, and style — but here are typical installed ranges:
Single-car door: $800 – $1,400 | Double-car door: $1,100 – $2,200+
Insulated steel, wood composite, and carriage-house styles all affect price. The fastest way to get an accurate number for your home is to submit a request — we'll follow up same day.
🔧 Get an instant estimate →Opener installation runs $250 – $600 depending on drive type and features:
· Chain drive — most affordable, slightly louder
· Belt drive — quieter, great for attached garages
· Direct drive / jackshaft — quietest, fewest moving parts, premium price
Smart WiFi models (app control, alerts) add $40–$80 to the unit cost. Submit a request and we'll quote your specific model.
🔧 See opener options →Yes — for new door installations and opener upgrades, estimates are free. Submit your request and we'll follow up to schedule a time that works.
For repairs, the $189 service call covers the diagnostic. If you proceed with the repair, that fee applies toward your total.
📄 Request a free estimate →Most installations are same-week — often 1–2 business days from your request. On-site, a standard door installation takes 3–5 hours.
For comparison, national big-box stores and many chain installers quote 3–4 week lead times. We don't work that way.

Classic signs of a broken torsion spring:
· You heard a loud bang from the garage (often described as a gunshot crack)
· The door opens 6 inches then stops
· The door feels extremely heavy when you try to lift it manually
· There's a visible gap in the coil above the door
Don't force it. A door with a broken spring puts enormous stress on the opener and cables. Call us — this is a same-day repair in most cases.
📞 Request spring repair →Repair when: door is under 15 years old, panels are structurally sound, and the problem is mechanical (spring, cable, opener).
Replace when: panels are cracked or dented, the door is 20+ years old, you've repaired it multiple times recently, or you want better insulation, lower energy bills, or updated curb appeal.
A good rule: if repair costs more than 50% of a new door, replace it. Request a free estimate to see what a new door would cost — then compare.
🔧 Price a new door →The most common cause: a broken spring. The motor runs, but the broken spring means the door is too heavy to lift. Second most common: the disconnect rope was pulled (there's a red cord hanging from the trolley — if it was pulled, the door runs in manual mode and the opener isn't connected).
Check the disconnect first — reconnect by pulling the cord toward the door until it clicks. If the door still won't open or feels very heavy, stop. Call us.
Chain drive: Uses a metal chain — reliable, affordable, and built for years of use. The tradeoff is noise. Fine for detached garages.
Belt drive: Rubber belt instead of chain — noticeably quieter and smoother. Best if the garage is under a bedroom or living space.
Direct drive / jackshaft: The motor travels along a stationary chain, or mounts to the side wall — the quietest option with the fewest moving parts. Higher upfront cost, lower long-term maintenance.
A well-maintained garage door lasts 15–30 years depending on material and usage. Key components wear sooner:
· Springs: 7–10 years (10,000–20,000 cycles)
· Openers: 10–15 years
· Cables: 8–12 years
Annual lubrication (hinges, rollers, springs) and a quick visual check each season can add years to every component.
Insulated steel is the best overall choice for New England — it handles freeze-thaw cycles, salt air, and humidity without warping or cracking. Look for R-value 12–18 for attached garages (it makes a real difference on heating bills).
Wood composite gives a traditional carriage-house look without solid wood's maintenance headaches. Holds up better in coastal and high-humidity locations than real wood.
Avoid uninsulated steel or solid wood if you're near the coast or the garage is temperature-controlled.
Often yes. If your opener is less than ~15 years old, we can typically add a smart WiFi module (like MyQ) that connects to your phone — no full replacement needed. Adds app control, open/close alerts, and Amazon Key access.
If your opener is older or incompatible, upgrading to a new smart opener runs about $300–$450 installed and is usually worth it — you get a warranty, better safety sensors, and modern features.
Call us or submit a request. We'll follow up within the business day — no pushy sales, just straight answers and honest pricing.
